An apartment for a renowned chef is reimagined within a landmark building in NoMad, New York, guided by art, colour and furniture that invite exploration through each threshold.
Shaping architecture through a holistic, interdisciplinary lens, Studio Zung draws on over 30 years of experience across architecture, design and curation. This ethos carries through in the studio’s 2025 renovation of Maison Madison, for client and chef Daniel Humm. Here, founder Tommy Zung reworks the residence within a landmark building set alongside Madison Square Park. The setting establishes an ongoing dialogue between interior and landscape, with Zung approaching the palette with “a sense of quiet continuity, drawing from the park’s seasonal shifts, soft greens, and natural textures”.
Humm’s enduring regard for art is expressed across the home, with the project unfolding through layered texture, materiality and light. Connecting this to Humm’s profession as a chef, Zung says of food and architecture,“ it is about harmony and precision, but also about emotion and memory”. The decision to retain the existing timber flooring acknowledges the home’s legacy, while custom-designed furniture pieces reflect Humm’s sensibility and Zung’s contemporary eye. Bold colour moves through each room, with a Bordeaux tone inspired by Humm’s wine collection at his restaurant Eleven Madison Park. “We custom-mixed the finish to achieve a rich, emotive burgundy” Zung says, referencing the deep hues of the family room that creates “a sense of warmth, depth, and immersion.”
The kitchen forms the heart of the home, with stools by Charlotte Perriand from Punjab University, Chandigarh introducing material depth.

The kitchen is a cornerstone of the apartment, operating as a sanctuary with “a palpable sense of comfort and intimacy in contrast to his professional kitchens,” Zung says. Industrial cues emerge in the stainless steel cabinetry, paired with custom Studio Zung shelving to introduce unique specificity. Material choices remain restrained and tactile, allowing light and shadow to breathe outside life into the space throughout the day. Though an apartment, with two bedrooms and three bathrooms, the layout responds with generous windows, ceiling and thresholds, a recurring idea for Zung. “My idea of threshold operates both physically and emotionally” Zung says. “Architecturally, it is expressed through the sequencing of spaces, the gentle compression and release as one moves from the entry into the living areas, or from public to private rooms. Materially, it appears through subtle shifts in texture, tone, and light, rather than abrupt contrasts.”
These moments encourage pause and a heightened sense of presence. Through a process of mindful discovery, Maison Madison resolves as a creative sanctuary, where material, light and landscape are held in quiet balance.
The living room features a Cassina Mexique coffee table by Charlotte Perriand paired with a Mathieu Matégot sculptural light, a Buddhist artefact and a Cassina Tabouret Berger stool by Charlotte Perriand.
The family room is intimate in its palette and interiors, featuring a custom Studio Zung sofa with a Donald Judd cocktail table and artwork by Rashid Johnson.
The primary bedroom pairs Studio Zung cubbies of antique ceramics with a Room & Board Avery bed and sculptural stools by Balkrishna Doshi and Le Corbusier as bedside tables.
A Waterworks Henry vanity becomes the focal point of the primary bathroom, set against BAS Marble in Breccia Capraia Vintage with Robern Mainline mirrors.
